Trigeminal Neuralgia is an extremely painful condition affecting the face. It can involve 1 or 2 or all 3 nerves in the face. It usually caused severe pain onone side of the face. Pain can be triggered by cold air, talking, brushing teeth, combing hair, touch, etc.
Treatments include medication like carbamazepine or oxcarbazepine. Most patients will require pain interventions like trigeminal ganglion radiofrequency treatment, glycerol injection, balloon compression or gamma knife. Elderly patients and patients without vascular loop in the brain MRI are suitable of pain interventions. Rarely, patient may require cranial surgeries like micro vascular decompression to treat trigeminal neuralgia.
